Cecilia’s Aging Gracefully Skincare Series: Repair & Restore in Your 50s+

Hello Gorgeous!

Today is the final installment of my Aging Gracefully Skincare Series. For the past few weeks, we’ve covered skincare for those of you who are in your twenties, thirties, and forties. Now it’s time to discuss the needs of your skin once you hit the big 5-0 and onward. The focus during these years should be on repairing collagen and restoring hyaluronic acid, both of which are factors that affect both the appearance and the health of your skin. Here are my favorite ways to keep skin looking beautiful in your fifties, sixties, and above: The biggest tweak I tell my clients to make as they reach this landmark age is to focus more on the internal components of your skin health. While I previously mentioned that in your twenties, it’s essential to establish healthy lifestyle habits like eating lots of fruit and vegetables and exercising, once you reach your fifties, it’s important to take a more targeted approach. As I always say, beautiful skin starts from within and there are a few supplements I’m always recommending to my clients that make a big impact on the appearance of their skin. I want to preface this by saying that I am by no means a doctor and therefore these are simply suggestions. Always consult a healthcare professional before adding any supplements into your routine.

First off, Great Lakes Collagen Hydrolysate is my absolute favorite supplement for aging and collagen loss. It improves hydration to the connective tissue, helping skin get that “bounce” back. Though this collagen comes from cows, its powder form has no taste, making it perfect for adding to smoothies, coffee, or matcha. I also recommend beginning to try to incorporate more omega-3s into your diet, whether by eating foods that have high concentrations or by taking a supplement. Omega-3 fatty acids help to boost the membrane of the outer layer of the skin, helping it to retain more moisture, which softens the skin, leaving it smoother and making wrinkles less noticeable. The best food sources of omega-3s are salmon, mackerel, walnuts, and chia seeds, all of which totally support a healthy lifestyle. Additionally, I suggest for clients in this age group is to start taking maca, a root native to Peru. Maca is a superfood, as it’s high in iron, vitamin C, calcium, and essential amino acids. This superfood boosts energy and aids rejuvenation, allowing you to look more bright-eyed and bushy tailed. I recommend adding maca powder to your morning smoothie for a healthy energy boost.

Now that we’ve discussed how to eat for the best skin in your fifties, sixties, and above, we can move on to what to use topically for the best results. As I mentioned, this age is the time to focus on collagen repair and restoring hyaluronic acid, as both are essential elements for youthful looking skin. My favorite mask for this age group is Hyaluronic Mask (sold at my skincare clinic), that contains hyaluronic acid, to moisturize and plump the skin. It also has deep sea water extract to stimulate collagen production, leaving your skin feeling firm and looking bright. Another great mask option is Ilike’s Carotene Essentials Rich Mask which utilizes carrots to hydrate and stimulate cell turnover to remove dry, damaged skin cells and replace them with new healthy ones. Finally, my best-selling Black Currant Serum is designed to nourish and revive skin, and while it can really benefit skin at any age, it’s truly amazing for those in your fifties and above. Thanks to its high levels of phytonutrients, antioxidants, vitamins, and essential fatty acids, which are the foundation to boosting collagen and elasticity, this serum brings life back to your complexion.
